The Sony FX5 Cinema Camera with XLR Handle Unit brings Sony's latest Cinema Line technology into a compact, handheld ready body built for hybrid production work. At its core is a newly developed 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor and an integrated AI processing unit, delivering fast readout, strong low-light performance, and intelligent subject recognition. This bundle includes the XLR-H2 XLR Handle Unit, adding two combo XLR inputs and 32-bit float recording for professional audio capture straight out of the box. Whether shooting documentary, commercial, or independent cinema work, the FX5 is designed to move fluidly between handheld, gimbal, and studio setups without sacrificing image quality or workflow flexibility. The FX5 blends the compact, handheld design that made Sony's earlier Cinema Line cameras popular with next-generation imaging technology and control refinements built for demanding hybrid productions. The stacked architecture of the newly developed 16.6MP full-frame sensor enables faster data processing while reducing rolling shutter artifacts, making it well suited to fast-moving subjects and handheld productions. Combined with Sony's advanced colour science, the sensor produces natural tonal transitions and refined highlight retention suitable for both immediate delivery and extensive post-production workflows. The FX5 records internally up to 5K Open Gate (3:2) at 60 fps in X-OCN, capturing the full width of the sensor for maximum flexibility when reframing or delivering multiple aspect ratios from a single take. A 5K120 (16:9) mode is also available for high frame rate capture, giving editors more room to work with fast motion without leaving the native resolution. Three native ISO settings, 800, 4000, and 12800, let you choose the base sensitivity that best matches the lighting on set rather than relying on a single fixed ISO. The additional ISO 4000 setting is new to the FX5 and delivers cleaner low-light performance without increasing image noise. Paired with a Dual Gain mode, the three base ISO settings combine to deliver more than 16 stops of dynamic range in the camera's Sensor Overdrive Mode, preserving highlight detail while maintaining clean, low-noise shadows across a wide range of lighting conditions. Powered by the BIONZ XR2 processor and its integrated AI processing unit, the FX5 brings Sony's latest intelligent autofocus technology to the Cinema Line. Advanced subject recognition identifies people, birds, and animals while maintaining accurate focus through changing scenes, and improved low-light autofocus performance keeps the system responsive even as lighting conditions become less predictable. A redesigned 3.5" widescreen 4-axis multi-angle touchscreen provides flexible composing from high, low, or unconventional shooting positions. A redesigned button layout, six assignable custom buttons, and a new multifunction control dial keep frequently used settings within easy reach without interrupting the shot. An enhanced in-body stabilization system adds improved roll correction, while a dynamic active mode provides additional electronic stabilization for handheld movement, helping the FX5 stay steady through weddings, travel work, and other dynamic content shoots. The FX5 sits between the compact FX3 and the more heavily equipped FX6. It shares its form factor with the FX3 but moves to the newer stacked sensor and BIONZ XR2 processing, while stopping short of the FX6's pro-level connections such as SDI and its larger BP-U battery system. This makes it a practical middle ground for creators who want more imaging performance than the FX3 without the size and complexity of the FX6. The included XLR-H2 XLR Handle Unit adds two combo XLR/TRS inputs and enables 32-bit float audio recording, eliminating clipping and expanding dynamic range. It connects via the Multi Interface Shoe for a cable-free digital audio connection and includes physical dials and controls for dialing in audio settings on the fly.Overview
