GoPro's New Compact Cinema Cameras: MISSION 1 PRO and PRO ILS

GoPro's compact cinema camera now comes in two forms: the fixed-lens MISSION 1 PRO, and the Micro Four Thirds MISSION 1 PRO ILS.
GoPro's MISSION 1 PRO has been out for about a month now, a genuine step away from GoPro's usual action cameras and into proper compact cinema camera territory. The newest addition is the MISSION 1 PRO ILS, the same camera at heart, but built around a native Micro Four Thirds lens mount instead of a fixed lens. Both share the same 50MP 1" sensor and GP3 processor, so this isn't a case of picking the "better" camera, it's picking the lens approach that suits how you actually shoot. Here's what's new, how the two differ, and what's worth adding to either kit.
Standout features
Everything below applies to both cameras unless we say otherwise, the PRO and PRO ILS share the same core hardware.
50MP 1" sensor and GP3 processor
The larger 1" sensor and new GP3 processor bring roughly twice the pixel-processing power of earlier GoPro generations, for cleaner low-light footage, a wider 14-stop dynamic range, and faster frame rates without the usual noise trade-off.
Open Gate 8K and 4K recording
Both cameras shoot Open Gate footage, a taller 4:3 frame rather than standard 16:9, at up to 8K30 and 4K240. That extra height gives editors real room to reframe for different platforms after the fact, alongside GP-Log2 and 10-bit colour for more control in the grade.
Micro Four Thirds lens mount, PRO ILS only
The PRO ILS swaps GoPro's fixed lens for a native Micro Four Thirds mount, so you can change focal lengths on set rather than being locked into one field of view. GoPro recommends a lens support for anything heavier than 250g, to keep weight off the mount itself.
HyperSmooth stabilisation and Horizon Lock
HyperSmooth is tuned for action and underwater use, with AutoBoost adjusting the shot based on how fast you're moving, and Horizon Lock keeping the frame level through a full 360 degrees of rotation.
32-bit float audio, four microphones
Four built-in microphones capture stereo 32-bit float audio with wind-noise reduction and automatic gain control, or connect a wireless mic over Bluetooth, including GoPro's own Wireless Mic Transmitter, for cleaner audio without touching the camera's own limiters.
Longer runtime, faster charging
A higher-capacity 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery is good for up to five hours recording 1080p30, and fast-charges to 80% in around 27 minutes. A redesigned thermal system also keeps both cameras running cooler in extreme heat and cold.
Considerations
The PRO ILS is a body only, no lens is included, so budget for at least one Micro Four Thirds lens on top before you can shoot with it, which makes it the more expensive way in overall. It's also not waterproof, unlike the PRO's sealed, housing-free 20m rating, since opening the lens mount to swap glass rules out a permanent seal. The PRO's Freewell filters and protective housing are both built around its fixed lens and won't fit the ILS, and lenses heavier than 250g need a lens support to protect the ILS's mount. Battery life is rated at up to five hours on both, expect less once you're shooting 8K or the higher frame rates. Weighed against all that, the PRO is the simpler, cheaper way in, complete with its own lens and ready to shoot straight out of the box.

Filters for the MISSION 1 PRO
Freewell's filters for the MISSION 1 series use a quick-lock mount rather than a screw thread, built specifically for the PRO's fixed lens. That means they're a PRO-only accessory, if you're shooting the PRO ILS, look for a standard filter that matches whichever Micro Four Thirds lens you've got mounted instead.
