Nikon Teases NIKKOR Z Cinema T1.9 VV Lens Series In Development

Nikon confirms a full cinema lens series is coming
The NIKKOR Z Cinema T1.9 VV series is nine lenses deep, built with RED, and designed to cover the V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor. It's still in development, but Nikon's confirmed the first solid details.
Nikon has confirmed development of the NIKKOR Z Cinema T1.9 VV series, a line-up of nine cinema lenses built in partnership with RED Digital Cinema. Nothing's released yet, there's no price and no launch date, but Nikon has confirmed it will be the first NIKKOR series with an image circle large enough to cover RED's V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor, which Nikon describes as larger than a full-frame sensor.
What Nikon has actually confirmed
Nikon and RED are keeping most of the lineup under wraps for now, so treat the rest of the series as unconfirmed until more comes out. What's on the record so far:
- Nine lenses in the series. A full T1.9 line-up is planned, though only one focal length has been shown publicly so far.
- A 50mm T1.9 VV shown as the lead lens. The rest of the range's focal lengths haven't been detailed yet.
- Part of the NIKKOR Z Cinema line. The series carries the NIKKOR Z Cinema name, placing it alongside Nikon's existing Z-mount cinema lenses.
- Built to cover the V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor. The first NIKKOR series with an image circle large enough for that sensor, which Nikon says is larger than a full-frame sensor.
- A highly precise autofocus mechanism. Nikon says the series is built with autofocus designed to support creators' workflows. No detail yet on how autofocus and manual control work together on set.
- A joint effort with RED. Nikon's framing this as new synergy between the two companies, built around the idea of pairing cinema-grade rendering with the practicalities of an actual production workflow.
The bigger picture
Since Nikon acquired RED, cinema shooters have been watching for signs of how the two companies would bring their lineups together. This series is the first concrete example, cinema lenses built specifically around a RED sensor format, with autofocus called out as a design priority from the first announcement. Nikon hasn't detailed how that autofocus mechanism actually works on set, so it's worth waiting on more before assuming anything about handling, but it's a real signal of the direction Nikon and RED are taking their combined cinema lineup.
What we don't know yet
Nikon hasn't announced pricing, a release date, or the other eight focal lengths in the series. Physical specs like weight, size, and filter thread also haven't been detailed.
