Insta360 has just announced the X6, the newest camera in its 360° line and the follow-up to the X5. It keeps the format that made the X5 a favourite with adventure sports and everyday creators, and pushes several things further, including a genuine jump in waterproofing depth and a completely reworked AI editing experience. Here's what's new, and how to build a kit around it.
The X6 is a meaningful step up for anyone shooting underwater, in bad weather, or who wants Insta360's PanoMind AI to handle framing and editing for them. If you already shoot comfortably on an X5, it's worth weighing up whether these specific upgrades matter for how you shoot, more on that below.
Who the X6 is for
- Divers and watersports creators who want to shoot without a separate housing at moderate depths.

None of that means the X5 has suddenly stopped being a good camera, it's still a genuinely capable 360° camera and will keep being sold and supported. Building your kit
The X6 works fine straight out of the box, but a few accessories are worth knowing about if you're planning to actually push it in the conditions it's built for, protection on set, longer days away from a charger, or getting it properly rigged up rather than hand-held.
Considerations
If you're already shooting comfortably on an X5, this isn't an automatic upgrade. The X6's real gains, the jump to 120MP stills, 8K360 video up to 50fps instead of 30fps, single-lens video up to 4K120 instead of 1080p120, 5m of extra waterproofing, and 47GB of built-in storage as a backup, matter most if you're pushing the X5 in exactly those areas already. If you're mostly shooting well within the X5's limits, the case to upgrade is weaker. Worth noting too, those bigger files (120MP stills, higher frame rate 8K) will eat through microSD storage faster, so budget for a fast, high-capacity card if you don't already run one.
