The Sony FX3A Full-Frame Cinema Camera with Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II Lens Kit combines Sony’s compact, cage-free Cinema Line body with a fast G Master standard zoom for a powerful all-in-one package for solo shooters, filmmakers, and content creators. The FX3A delivers 12.1MP full-frame cinematic imaging, 4K recording up to 120p, advanced autofocus, and professional audio, while the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens adds a bright constant f/2.8 aperture, class-leading sharpness, and refined bokeh in a compact, lightweight design. Firmware v2.00 for the FX3A introduces the BIG6 home screen, giving quick visibility over key shooting settings and equipment configurations in a single, streamlined interface. New 1.5x and 1.6x De-Squeeze Display magnifications improve monitoring of anamorphic content directly on the camera’s LCD. The update adds support for Focus Magnifier and Auto Magnifier in manual focus modes while using Bright Monitoring, enabling precise focus checks in low light. It also unlocks raw video output via HDMI for external Blackmagic Raw recording and allows automatic recognition of USB-LAN conversion adapters for wired network connectivity. Workflow refinements include the ability to filter camera images for smartphone or FTP transfers and to record the optical density of pre-registered ND filters in metadata, making it easier to track creative and technical decisions throughout production and post. The FX3A’s 12.1MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor (10.2MP effective for video) is paired with a BIONZ XR processor for high-sensitivity, low-noise imaging. The back-illuminated structure improves light gathering for an ISO range of 80 to 102400 (expandable to 409600), while delivering more than 15 stops of dynamic range for nuanced highlight and shadow detail. S-Cinetone provides cinematic color and pleasing skin tones that match Sony’s VENICE, FX9, and FX6 cameras. For deeper grading flexibility and multi-camera workflows, the FX3A supports S-Log3 with S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine, as well as S-Log2. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) enables direct HDR delivery, and Standard gamma modes cover fast-turnaround projects without extensive post. The FX3A records UHD 4K at frame rates from 1 to 120 fps and Full HD 1080p from 1 to 240 fps, including Super 35 format capture for high-frame-rate HD. Internal recording options include XAVC HS, XAVC S, and XAVC S-I with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling for robust gradation and color. Proxy files can be captured alongside full-resolution clips to streamline editing. For maximum image quality and flexibility, the FX3A outputs 16-bit raw via HDMI at up to DCI 4K and UHD 4K resolutions while simultaneously recording XAVC 4K and proxies internally. A silent active cooling system and dedicated heatsink enable uninterrupted recording in demanding environments, including extended 4K 60p sessions. The Fast Hybrid AF system employs 759 phase-detection points covering approximately 89% of the image area for fast, reliable focus acquisition. Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF use AI-based algorithms to maintain focus on moving subjects, even as they move through the frame or briefly turn away from the camera. Seven AF Transition Speed settings enable controlled, cinematic focus pulls, while five AF Subject Shift Sensitivity levels let you define how quickly focus shifts between subjects. Together, these controls give operators fine-grained control over the look and feel of focus behaviour. The FX3A is designed for cage-free operation, with multiple 1/4-20 mounting points integrated directly into the camera body and detachable handle. This allows accessories such as monitors, microphones, and arms to be mounted without an additional cage, reducing weight and setup time. Grouped controls for record, focus, and menu functions, plus six customizable buttons, support single-handed operation and fast configuration changes. A 7.6 cm tilting touchscreen LCD (classed as 3 inches, approximately 2.35 million dots) offers flexible viewing angles and direct touch control for focus and menu navigation. Tally lamps on the top, front, and rear clearly indicate recording status to the operator, talent, and crew, improving timing for movements and dialogue. The included XLR handle unit adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs, a mic holder, and dedicated controls for capturing professional audio directly in-camera. Combined with the built-in stereo mic and 3.5 mm mic input, the FX3A supports up to four channels of 24-bit LPCM audio or two channels when preferred, covering scenarios from on-camera shotgun mics to dual wireless systems and line feeds. Remote operation is supported via Sony’s Imaging Edge Mobile and Imaging Edge Desktop apps, enabling wireless control and monitoring. Files can be transferred over dual-band Wi-Fi or via USB-C to keep post-production moving quickly. The FX3A also works with the Imaging Edge Webcam app for live streaming when connected to a computer. When used with compatible E-mount lenses, the FX3A records camera shake metadata, which can be used with Sony’s Catalyst Prepare or Catalyst Browse software to stabilise footage in post. You can fine-tune the balance between stabilisation strength and image crop, preserving composition while smoothing motion. The FX3A shares core technologies with the FX6 and a7S III, including a 12.1MP full-frame Exmor R sensor, BIONZ XR processor, 4K 120p and HD 240p recording, and 15+ stops of dynamic range. Gamma options such as S-Cinetone, S-Log3, HLG, and Rec.709 ensure easy integration into existing Sony Cinema Line workflows. Tally lamps, an internal cooling fan, and a zoom lever further reinforce its cinema-focused design. 5-axis in-body image stabilisation helps deliver smooth handheld footage, especially when paired with stabilised E-mount lenses. The camera offers 16-bit raw output over HDMI, an extended ISO range up to 409600, and improved power management with the NP-FZ100 battery delivering significantly longer runtimes than previous generations. USB Power Delivery support enables extended operation from compatible external power sources, while Wi-Fi 5 and wired LAN via USB-C and adapter support efficient on-set collaboration. The FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens is a refined take on the classic fast standard zoom, delivering a wide-to-short-telephoto range in a body that is both smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Designed as a flexible go-to lens for a wide variety of shooting scenarios, it balances professional optical performance with a compact, travel-ready form factor that pairs perfectly with the FX3A. Optics have been completely reworked to rival prime lenses, with even greater resolution, clarity, and bokeh quality across the zoom range. A bright, constant f/2.8 aperture supports low-light shooting and shallow depth-of-field imagery. Two ED and two Super ED elements effectively suppress chromatic aberrations and colour fringing, delivering clean, high-contrast images. Five aspherical elements, including two extreme aspherical (XA) elements, minimise spherical aberrations and distortion while also helping to reduce undesirable “onion ring” bokeh artifacts. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II and a new optical design reduce internal reflections to control flare and ghosting, maintaining contrast in backlit conditions. An 11-blade diaphragm produces smooth, circular bokeh at a wide range of apertures. Four XD Linear Motors deliver significantly faster, quieter, and more precise autofocus than the previous DDSSM system, making this lens highly capable for both stills and video work. Faster AF supports high-speed continuous shooting up to 30 fps on compatible bodies, with full AF performance maintained even when stopped down, and reliable focus tracking across the zoom range. A floating focus mechanism maintains image quality throughout the focusing range and enhances close-up performance. The lens focuses as close as 21 cm at 24 mm and 30 cm at 70 mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.32x at the long end, making it suitable for detailed close-up and product work. Internal focusing keeps the lens length constant during operation, improving handling and balance on gimbals and rigs. Designed with video in mind, the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II minimises focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming to maintain framing and composition while recording. It also supports the Breathing Compensation function on select Sony cine and Alpha cameras for even more consistent results. The XD Linear Motors operate with very low noise, enabling dependable AF use in sound-sensitive environments. Linear Response MF provides a natural, repeatable manual focus feel that responds directly to rotation of the focus ring. A manual aperture ring offers tactile exposure control and can be de-clicked for smooth, silent iris pulls, or locked in the “A” position for camera-based aperture control. A zoom smoothness switch lets you choose between smoother or tighter zoom torque depending on your preferred feel and shooting style. Among the smallest and lightest f/2.8 standard zooms in its class, the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is approximately 22% lighter and 18% smaller than the original version, making it easier to carry all day and ideal for gimbal setups. A hybrid construction using both metal and high-grade plastics balances durability with low weight. The lens is dust- and moisture-resistant, with rubber gaskets at each seam and a sealing ring at the mount for reliable performance in challenging weather. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and contaminants and makes cleaning easier. Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch on the barrel provide intuitive focus control, while the supplied lens hood includes a locking button and a filter window for convenient adjustment of rotating filters such as polarisers or variable NDs.
