As part of Sony’s Cinema Line, the FX6 shares core imaging attributes with models like the VENICE and FX9, including a full-frame sensor, cinematic colour science, compact form factor, professional interfaces, and advanced autofocus options. It matches the FX9’s capture up to DCI 4K 60 frames per second, offers the same S-Cinetone, S-Log3, and HLG gamma settings, outputs 16-bit raw, supports the Sony E-mount, and provides electronic ND from 1/4 to 1/128 plus dual XLR audio inputs.
Differences include 4K capture instead of 6K, a single 12G/6G/3G-SDI BNC output instead of dual SDI ports, and the presence of a timecode connector without genlock. Improved specifications compared to the FX9 include a higher maximum ISO of 409600, top frame rates of 120 frames per second in 4K and up to 240 frames per second in Full HD, and dual card slots that accept both CFexpress Type A and SDXC media instead of relying on XQD cards.
Firmware v4.0 Enhancements
Firmware v4.0 introduces features requested by professional users, including anamorphic de-squeeze ratios of 1.3x and 2.0x for monitoring in the viewfinder and over HDMI output. Cine EI Quick workflow support aligns the FX6 with cameras such as the FX3 and FX30, streamlining multi-camera setups and exposure workflows.
Clip naming is now matched to the CineAlta naming scheme, simplifying project organisation when using multiple Sony cameras. Autofocus is available at frame rates of 7 frames per second or higher in Slow & Quick mode, expanding the range of situations where you can rely on AF even during high-frame-rate capture.
Exposure, ND Control, and Codecs
Electronically Variable ND Filters
The FX6 features an electronically variable ND filter system that can be set to automatic mode for consistent exposure even as lighting changes, or adjusted manually in smooth increments. Density can be shifted continuously between 1/4 and 1/128 (approximately 2 to 7 stops) while recording, enabling exposure compensation without altering shutter speed, aperture, or ISO, and preserving your chosen depth of field and motion rendering.
Advanced XAVC Codec Options
As the first compact full-frame camera to offer UHD 4K 4:2:2 recording in the efficient XAVC-I codec, the FX6 provides a robust range of professional XAVC Intra and XAVC Long formats at bit rates from 35 to 600 megabits per second. These codecs offer a balance between image quality, file size, and workflow flexibility that suits everything from broadcast to streaming and cinema delivery.
High Frame Rate Recording
For expressive slow motion and fast action capture, the FX6 offers the following full-frame frame rate options:
- 1 to 60 frames per second in Full HD through DCI 4K resolutions.
- 100 and 120 frames per second in Full HD through UHD 4K.
- 150, 180, 200, and 240 frames per second in Full HD.
Super 35 format choices include 1 to 60, 100, and 120 frames per second in Full HD. These options provide a wide range of motion effects, from subtly slowed action to dramatic ultra slow motion, while maintaining high image quality.
Colour Science, Autofocus, and Stabilisation Metadata
Expressive Cinematic Look
Sony’s S-Cinetone gamma curve provides a cinematic look in-camera with filmlike colour, softer tonal transitions, and pleasing skin tones that can be used straight out of camera or with minimal grading. S-Log3, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3.Cine offer extended grading latitude and ensure a close match to VENICE and FX9 footage, while HLG and Rec.709 modes support both HDR and conventional delivery requirements.
Fast Hybrid Phase-Detection Autofocus
Fast Hybrid AF combines phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to deliver rapid focusing with high accuracy, even in low light. Face Detection and Eye AF modes keep subjects locked in focus, while the autofocus system offers seven transition-speed steps and five subject-sensitivity levels, allowing you to tailor how quickly focus shifts between subjects for more cinematic racking effects.
Stabilisation and Catalyst Metadata Workflow
While the FX6 does not include in-body sensor stabilisation, it records stabilisation metadata that can be interpreted by Sony’s Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Browse software. Using this metadata, you can stabilise footage in post, automatically correct gimbal orientation, and add flags for easier clip filtering, ensuring smoother results without sacrificing field of view on set.
Monitoring, Build, and Reliability
Touchscreen LCD Control
The included 3.5" external touchscreen LCD provides high-resolution monitoring with a display resolution of 1280 x 720 and approximately 2.76 million dots. Touch controls offer quick access to key settings such as codec, imager scan mode, picture size and frequency, base ISO or sensitivity, shooting mode, and audio levels, reducing menu-diving and speeding up on-set operation.
Durable Magnesium Alloy Chassis
A lightweight yet robust magnesium alloy chassis maximises durability while efficiently dissipating heat to support extended recording times. Exterior seams, buttons, and interfaces are treated with enhanced sealing to improve dust and moisture resistance, helping the FX6 remain dependable in demanding field conditions.
Audio, Interfaces, and Media
Four-Channel Audio Recording
The FX6 supports up to four-channel audio recording by combining inputs from its dual XLR connectors on the handle, the two-channel multi-interface shoe, and the mono microphone built into the camera’s top handle. This enables you to capture a primary dialogue or interview source, ambient sound, and operator comments simultaneously, all at 24-bit and 48 kHz via LPCM.
Professional Input and Output Interfaces
Professional connectivity includes a selectable 12G/6G/3G-SDI BNC output for flexible monitoring and external recording, an HDMI 2.0 output, and 16-bit raw output via SDI for maximum image quality in post-production workflows. Additional ports include a timecode input/output for multi-camera sync, a barrel power input, USB-C and Multi/Micro-USB data connections, control interfaces, and an intelligent Multi Interface hot shoe.
CFexpress Media Slots and Recording Modes
Dual media slots accept both CFexpress Type A and UHS-I/UHS-II SDXC cards, providing a choice between rugged, high-performance media and widely available SD cards. CFexpress Type A cards are required for UHD 4K capture at 100 and 120 frames per second and Full HD recording at 150, 180, 200, and 240 frames per second, ensuring that high-frame-rate modes have sufficient throughput.
Remote Control and Wireless Operation
Content Browser Mobile and Wi-Fi Control
The FX6 includes a built-in Wi-Fi module and supports the Content Browser Mobile app for Android and iOS devices. Using a compatible smartphone or dedicated remote, you can monitor the image, control focus, iris, and zoom on supported lenses, and adjust selected camera settings wirelessly, enabling more flexible operation on set or on location.
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art Lens
A Classic, Evolved Standard Zoom
The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art lens for Sony E-mount refines the classic fast standard zoom with improved rendering performance in a shorter, lighter body. Maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture, it uses an advanced optical design to deliver higher sharpness and resolution while remaining highly portable. A clickable aperture ring, accelerated autofocus, and a minimum focusing distance of just 17 cm at the wide end make this lens ideal for creators seeking versatility without compromising image quality.
Sophisticated Optical Design
The lens incorporates six FLD elements, two SLD elements, and five aspherical elements to markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and colour fringing throughout the zoom range, improving clarity and colour accuracy. Enhanced control over sagittal coma flare maintains high resolution across the frame, particularly for point light sources and night scenes. The five aspherical elements also contribute to a compact build thanks to their thin, precisely shaped construction.
A bright f/2.8 aperture combined with a rounded 11-blade diaphragm produces large, smooth bokeh, adding depth and subject separation to portraits, events, and detail shots. Super multilayer and nano porous coatings minimise flare and ghosting and help maintain contrast-rich, colour-neutral imagery even when shooting in backlit conditions. The lens is also designed to suppress focus breathing, reducing changes in angle of view during focus pulls for more natural-looking video.
Faster Autofocus and Close Focusing
A high-response linear actuator (HLA) drives the autofocus, delivering focusing speeds more than three times faster than the previous version. This rapid and precise AF performance benefits both stills and video capture, especially with fast-moving subjects. At the wide-angle end, the minimum focusing distance of approximately 17 cm and a maximum magnification of 0.37x (1:2.7 reproduction ratio) support detailed close-ups and creative use of perspective in tight spaces.
Strong, Streamlined Build and Controls
With the same number of optical elements as its predecessor, the DG DN II variant shortens the overall length to approximately 12.2 cm and reduces the weight to around 735 g. A manual aperture ring with both click and lock switches improves handling, letting you choose stepped or smooth aperture control and lock the ring when using camera-based exposure control.
A robust internal structure uses metal components for the zoom extension mechanism, while rubber sealing at the mount helps protect against dust and moisture. Two integrated AF-L buttons can be programmed to control various camera functions, and the lens also includes a dedicated AF/MF switch and a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from extending unexpectedly. An 82 mm front filter thread supports common filters, and the included hood offers additional protection and flare reduction.
