Overview

Whether you're shooting documentaries, events, reality TV, education, or corporate productions, the Sony PXW-FX9 XDCAM 6K Full-Frame Camera System is a powerful and flexible interchangeable-lens video camera built around a full-frame, oversampled 6K Exmor R CMOS sensor that captures 4K images with cinematic depth of field. The camera's E-mount is machined from stainless steel, giving access to Sony's full range of E-mount lenses.

The FX9 pairs its imaging capability with comprehensive I/O, advanced hybrid autofocus, gyro-based image stabilization metadata, and 4-channel audio recording, making it equally suited to solo operation and larger multicamera productions. Its chassis is a refinement of the ergonomic FS7 design, offering compatibility with a large proportion of FS7 accessories including batteries, chargers, and E-mount lenses.

Oversampled 6K Full-Frame Sensor

The FX9's oversampled full-frame 6K sensor provides recording in DCI 4K, UHD, and HD resolutions. Powerful image processing with debayering and down-sampling delivers image quality beyond the limits of conventional Super 35mm sensors, and the back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS design improves sensitivity and noise reduction. Compared to a 4K Super 35mm sensor, the FX9's 6K sensor has over twice the surface area while providing a wider angle of view and shallower depth of field.

15+ Stops of Dynamic Range with S-Cinetone

The FX9 offers 15+ stops of dynamic range and supports dynamic HDR and hybrid log gamma (HLG), enabling creative freedom in color grading and post. S-Cinetone is the camera's default look, tuned with rich midrange colors, natural facial tones, and a softer tonal look developed with the same expertise as Sony's VENICE digital cinematography camera, so footage looks fresh and vivid straight out of the camera while retaining latitude in post-production.

Dual Base ISO up to 102,400

A dual base ISO of 800/4000, with a maximum of up to 102,400, helps in low light or when using a slower lens. The base sensitivity of ISO 800 provides optimal dynamic range for typical documentary applications shot outside or in brightly lit interiors, while the secondary base sensitivity of ISO 4000 excels in low-light conditions such as early morning and evening shoots. The FX9's extended ISO range spans 320 to 102,400.

16-Bit Raw via Optional XDCA-FX9 Unit

Pairing the FX9 with the optional XDCA-FX9 extension unit unlocks 16-bit raw output in either 2K or 4K over a single BNC cable to a compatible external recorder, fully exploiting the sensor's 15+ stops of dynamic range. The extension unit also adds advanced networking for streaming and file transfers, plus a slot-in for a wireless audio receiver.

Built-In 7-Stop Electronic ND Filter

A built-in, 7-stop electronic variable neutral density filter can be set to auto or adjusted manually in smooth increments from 1/4 to 1/128 as you shoot, creating properly exposed images without affecting depth of field as lighting conditions change.

Flexible Recording Formats and Backup Modes

  • 10-bit 4:2:2 recording to dual XQD media card slots supports simultaneous and relay recording, with selectable frame rates from 1 to 60 fps in XAVC-I, XAVC-Long, and MPEG HD formats.
  • XAVC-I offers 4:2:2 10-bit quality at up to 600 Mb/s in 60p, while XAVC-Long delivers longer recording time in a smaller file size.
  • Simul Rec enables simultaneous HD recording onto two media cards, and 4K/HD Sub Rec allows 4K recording on one card and MPEG HD on another.
  • XAVC Proxy Rec offers a 9 Mb/s proxy file for easy network transfer, and a maximum 28-second Cache Rec helps prevent missing a shot.

561-Point Fast Hybrid Autofocus

Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF combines phase-detection with contrast AF for fast, accurate subject tracking, and Face Detection intelligently recognizes and locks onto human faces. A dedicated 561-point phase-detection sensor covers approximately 94% of the image width and 96% of the height for consistently accurate tracking, even with fast-moving subjects. Seven-level AF transition speeds and five-level AF subject shift sensitivity let you tailor tracking behavior to the scene, from quick switching between subjects to a slower, more measured style.

Gyro-Based Image Stabilization Metadata

The FX9's built-in gyroscope generates stabilization metadata that can be used in Sony Catalyst Browse or Catalyst Prepare software in post-production to smooth handheld footage, letting you creatively balance shake compensation against the resolution of trimmed 4K imagery. This works with any E-mount lens and processes far faster than conventional NLE stabilization workflows.

4-Channel Audio Recording

Independent control dials for each audio channel allow simultaneous use of an external microphone for ambient sound and the built-in microphone for voice memos, useful for applications such as interviews.

Comprehensive Video and Data I/O

12G/6G-SDI and HDMI outputs handle 4K video, while a 3G-SDI output covers HD monitoring, and genlock and timecode terminals support multicamera setups. Additional connectivity includes LANC control and USB 3.2/3.1 Gen 1 data.

Wireless and Multicamera Networking

Internal 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi enables smartphone or tablet control using the Content Browser Mobile app, FTP file transfer, clip trimming, and upload of high-resolution and proxy footage to the C3 Portal cloud service. A wired LAN port and dual-link cellular support round out connectivity, and the optional XDCA-FX9 unit's RJ45 jack enables S700 protocol multicamera control for local events and TV studio production.

Additional Benefits

  • Sony's flexible Multi-Interface shoe provides power, signal connections, and coordinated on/off switching with compatible accessories.
  • A touchscreen quick menu on the LCD viewfinder, familiar to VENICE users, offers control over codec, scan mode, base ISO, shooting mode, and audio levels.
  • The magnesium alloy chassis is both robust and lightweight, with sealed buttons, dials, and other parts to resist dust and water spray.
  • The camera's EVF can switch between HDR and SDR emulation modes, recording SDR gain as metadata for easier post-production turnaround.
