The Sony FX3A Full-Frame Cinema Camera with Sony 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens Kit combines Sony’s compact, cage-free Cinema Line body with a versatile full-frame standard zoom to create a powerful all-in-one solution for solo shooters, filmmakers, and content creators. The FX3A pairs a 12.1MP back-illuminated Exmor R sensor and BIONZ XR processor with advanced autofocus, professional audio, and 4K recording up to 120p, while the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS lens delivers a constant f/4 aperture, sharp optics, and optical image stabilization for everything from wide establishing shots to short-telephoto portraits. Firmware v2.00 for the FX3A introduces the BIG6 home screen for quick review of shooting settings and equipment configurations, providing a more intuitive control layout for on-set operation. It adds 1.5x and 1.6x magnification options in the De-Squeeze Display for monitoring anamorphic content more accurately on the camera’s LCD. Additional refinements include support for Focus Magnifier and Auto Magnifier in manual focus settings while using the Bright Monitoring feature, enabling precise focus checks in low-light environments. The update also unlocks raw video output via HDMI for external Blackmagic Raw recording and enables automatic recognition of a separate USB-LAN conversion adapter for streamlined wired networking. Workflow and data management are improved with the ability to filter camera images for smartphone and FTP transfers, as well as record the optical density of pre-registered ND filters into metadata. These enhancements make the FX3A more flexible and connected across production and post-production pipelines. At the heart of the FX3A is a 12.1MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor (10.2MP effective for video) paired with a BIONZ XR processor. The back-illuminated design enhances clarity and sensitivity, delivering an extended ISO range of 80 to 409,600 (80 to 102,400 native) for working confidently in mixed or low-light conditions. The system offers more than 15 stops of dynamic range, helping preserve highlight and shadow detail for both dramatic exteriors and carefully lit interiors. The default S-Cinetone color profile provides natural, filmic skin tones and a gentle highlight roll-off that aligns with Sony’s VENICE, FX9, and FX6 cameras. For maximum grading flexibility and multi-camera matching, the FX3A supports S-Log3 with S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine, as well as S-Log2. A 10-bit HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) mode enables direct HDR delivery, while Standard gamma settings are available for quick turnaround projects. The FX3A captures sharp UHD 4K images at frame rates up to 120p, enabling up to 5x slow motion when played back at 24p. It also records Full HD 1080p at up to 240p using a Super 35 crop, offering ultra-slow-motion capabilities. Internal options include 10-bit 4:2:2 color with All-Intra and Long GOP codecs, plus XAVC HS and XAVC S for efficient compression and high image quality. For maximum quality and flexibility, the camera can output 16-bit raw via HDMI for external recording at DCI 4K and UHD 4K resolutions, while simultaneously recording XAVC 4K and proxy files internally. Cooling features such as a silent built-in fan and dedicated heatsink help prevent overheating, supporting uninterrupted recording up to 4K 60p. Dual media slots accept CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards for relay, backup, or proxy workflows. The FX3A’s Fast Hybrid AF system uses 759 phase-detection points to cover approximately 89% of the image area, ensuring quick, accurate focus across the frame. Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF, powered by AI-based algorithms, keep subjects sharply focused even during dynamic movement. Seven AF Transition Speed settings enable smooth, controlled focus pulls, while five AF Subject Shift Sensitivity levels let you fine-tune how quickly focus switches between subjects. Designed for solo operators, the FX3A features a streamlined, cage-free body with multiple 1/4-20 mounting points on the camera and handle, allowing direct attachment of accessories such as monitors, microphones, and arms without an additional cage. Key controls including the record button, focus controls, and menu access are clustered for one-handed operation, and six customizable buttons let you tailor the camera to your shooting style. A fold-out 7.6 cm tilting touchscreen LCD with approximately 2.35 million dots provides clear monitoring and intuitive touch control for focus and menu navigation. Tally indicators on the top, front, and rear of the camera clearly show when recording is active, helping operators, talent, and crew coordinate movement and dialogue with confidence. The detachable XLR handle unit adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs, a mic holder, and physical controls for capturing professional audio directly in-camera. Together with the FX3A’s built-in stereo microphone and 3.5 mm input, you can record up to four channels of 24-bit LPCM audio or two channels when preferred. This setup lets you run multiple mics, lavaliers, or line feeds without an external mixer. Remote operation is supported via Sony’s Imaging Edge Mobile and Imaging Edge Desktop applications, enabling wireless control and monitoring. Footage can be transferred over dual-band Wi-Fi or through a wired USB-C connection so editors can start working quickly. The FX3A also supports streaming via the Imaging Edge Webcam app when connected to a computer, making it suitable for live events and online productions. When paired with compatible E-mount lenses, the FX3A records shake metadata that can be used by Sony’s Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Browse software to refine stabilization in post-production. You can balance the level of shake compensation against image cropping to achieve the desired look while maintaining composition flexibility. In addition to its compact form factor and cage-free handling, the FX3A shares key attributes with the FX6 and a7S III, including a full-frame 12.1MP Exmor R sensor, BIONZ XR processing, 4K 120p and HD 240p recording, and 15+ stops of dynamic range. It offers S-Cinetone, S-Log3, HLG, and Rec.709 gamma options, plus front, side, and rear tally lamps and an internal fan for consistent recording performance. The camera includes 5-axis in-body image stabilization for smoother handheld footage, 16-bit raw output via HDMI, and an expanded ISO range up to 409,600. A high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery delivers runtime up to 1.6x longer than the older a7S II, and USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) support enables extended shooting from compatible power sources. Connectivity options include dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi and wired LAN via the USB-C port with a separate adapter. The included FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS lens is a full-frame, wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom designed as a flexible one-lens solution for everyday and professional use. Four aspherical elements, including two Advanced Aspherical elements, reduce spherical aberration and distortion throughout the zoom range for high sharpness and clarity. Three extra-low dispersion elements minimize chromatic aberration and color fringing for accurate, high-contrast imagery. A Nano AR Coating suppresses flare and ghosting to maintain contrast and color fidelity in strong or backlit conditions. The constant f/4 maximum aperture provides consistent exposure control and shallow depth-of-field possibilities throughout the zoom range, while a rounded nine-blade diaphragm enhances the smoothness of out-of-focus areas. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps counter camera shake, and can be combined with in-body stabilization for more effective control when shooting handheld. A Direct Drive Super Sonic wave motor and internal focus mechanism provide fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance, while allowing smooth manual focus override. The lens focuses as close as 0.38 m with a maximum magnification of 0.31x, making it suitable for detailed close-ups. A dust- and moisture-resistant construction supports outdoor shooting, and rubberized control rings improve handling in colder temperatures. The front element features a fluorine coating that resists smudges and dust. A focus hold button and AF/MF switch on the barrel give quick tactile access to key focus settings, and the lens remains relatively lightweight at approximately 663 g, making it an excellent everyday companion for the FX3A body.
