Overview

The RED DIGITAL CINEMA V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV Production Pack with Rigid-Hinge Touch 7" (V-Mount) is RED’s flagship large-format DSMC3 system, combining an 8K full-frame global shutter sensor with the advanced processing power of the V-RAPTOR platform. As the first large-format global shutter cinema camera, it eliminates rolling shutter artifacts while delivering 17+ stops of dynamic range — expandable to 20+ stops using RED’s Global Vision Extended Highlights.

Built for high-end cinema, broadcast, and virtual production, the V-RAPTOR [X] supports up to 8K120 recording, REDCODE RAW HQ/MQ/LQ and ProRes workflows, advanced phase-detect autofocus with face detection, and deep IP connectivity for modern production pipelines — all within a compact DSMC3 body weighing approximately 1.8 kg.

This Production Pack Kit is designed for professional on-set deployment and includes the DSMC3 Touch 7" LCD Monitor, Tactical Top Plate, Top Handle with Extensions, Expander Blade, Advanced V-Lock Adapter Plus, QR Platform Pack, Side Ribs, Production Plates, Production Grip, 5-Pin to Dual XLR Adapter, four REDVOLT MICRO-V batteries with a Compact Dual V-Lock Charger, plus dual 2TB PRO CFexpress cards and a card reader — delivering a complete, production-ready ecosystem straight out of the box.

Large-Format Global Shutter Sensor

The 40.96 x 21.6 mm full-frame CMOS sensor captures 8192 x 4320 resolution with a true electronic global shutter, eliminating skew, wobble, and flash banding. Fast action, strobes, explosions, and rapid motion are recorded without rolling shutter artifacts, preserving motion accuracy without compromising dynamic range or post-production flexibility.

A redesigned sensor cavity reduces stray light and improves contrast, further enhancing image integrity.

RED Global Vision & Extended Highlights

Global Vision leverages the global shutter architecture to expand tonal flexibility. Extended Highlights adds 3+ stops of additional highlight detail, increasing dynamic range up to 20+ stops while preserving colour fidelity in extreme brightness conditions.

This enables refined HDR finishing or smoother SDR highlight roll-off, maintaining detail even in challenging lighting environments.

Phantom Track & Virtual Production

Phantom Track enables GhostFrame and frame remapping workflows by recording independent R3D clips for each subframe slice while allowing live monitoring of selected slices via SDI outputs. This allows talent and directors to work against green screen backgrounds while VFX teams view isolated frame data simultaneously.

The feature also supports broadcast overlays and dedicated advertising frame workflows.

High Frame Rate 8K Performance

The V-RAPTOR [X] supports 8K capture up to 120 fps, with additional 6K, 4K, and 2K options reaching up to 600 fps (cropped modes). This flexibility enables cinematic slow motion, speed ramping, time-lapse effects, and extraction of high-resolution still frames from motion capture.

Advanced Autofocus & Audio

Enhanced on-sensor phase-detection autofocus with in-camera processing and face detection provides reliable subject tracking. Newly engineered audio preamps and improved internal audio architecture deliver cleaner, clearer external microphone recordings via the 5-pin LEMO input with +48 V phantom power.

Connectivity & IP Workflow

The DSMC3 platform supports remote control, remote monitoring, in-camera Frame.io integration, AWS direct upload, and RED Connect for live 8K R3D over IP or live 4K via SMPTE ST 2110.

Connectivity includes dual 12G-SDI outputs, USB-C video/data/control, RS-232 with genlock, dedicated timecode port, CFexpress Type B media, and Wi-Fi control capability.

Design & Durability

Constructed from aluminium with water- and dust-resistant materials in critical areas, the V-RAPTOR [X] is engineered for demanding environments. It is not waterproof but is built for professional field use.

The body measures approximately 14.96 x 11.6 x 10.8 cm and weighs approximately 1.8 kg (body only), maintaining the lightweight portability of the V-RAPTOR platform.

Assistant Control Display

A fixed 2.4" LCD on the assistant side provides format selection, camera control, and status monitoring. This display is dedicated to control functions and does not provide preview video.
