Content Creator & Vlogging Features
Tailored to creators, the ZV-1 integrates a rear 3.0" 921.6k-dot LCD touchscreen with a side flip-out design for natural selfie framing and monitoring. Because the screen flips to the side, the top plate is optimized for audio and control, with a directional 3-capsule microphone specifically tuned for forward-facing recording.
- Included wind screen and wind screen adapter for cleaner outdoor audio
- 3.5 mm microphone input and Multi Interface Shoe for external mics and accessories
- Large, easily identifiable REC button on the top plate
- Front tally lamp clearly indicates when recording is active
Dedicated vlogging tools include Product Showcase setting for smooth, quick focus transitions between your face and items held up to the lens, Background Defocus for instant shallow depth of field at maximum aperture, and a built-in ND filter to control exposure in bright conditions while maintaining wide apertures.
Face-Priority AE maintains ideal brightness on the subject’s face, even when moving from bright to shaded areas, while suppressing abrupt exposure shifts. Refined color science and Soft Skin Effect (Off/Low/Mid/High) optimize skin tones and gently smooth blemishes for a flattering, natural look across different ages, genders, and ethnicities.
Imaging & Performance
At the heart of the ZV-1 is a 20.1MP 1"-type Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor with an advanced architecture that stacks the pixel area, high-speed signal processing circuitry, and memory to increase data throughput. This design supports Single Burst Shooting, an Anti-Distortion shutter, UHD 4K video, and other high-speed features.
Paired with a revised BIONZ X image processor and front-end LSI, the camera offers fast operation, blackout-free continuous shooting up to 24 fps with AF/AE tracking, and improved image quality at higher sensitivities by reducing noise and enhancing detail and color. Native ISO in Auto mode ranges from 100 to 12,800, with an extended range of ISO 64 to 25,600 for stills and video.
ZEISS Lens & Stabilization
The integrated ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens spans a 24-70mm equivalent range, ideal for everything from arm’s-length vlogging to tighter framing and detail shots. Its bright f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture helps maintain low noise and a shallow depth of field in low light. A sophisticated optical design with specialized elements reduces aberrations and distortions, while ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating suppresses flare and ghosting for high contrast and accurate color.
The lens-based Optical SteadyShot system, combined with digital stabilization, minimizes the appearance of camera shake. For video, Active SteadyShot mode blends optical and electronic methods to deliver smoother footage, especially when walking.
- Up to approximately 11x shake reduction in HD Active mode compared to standard SteadyShot
- Up to approximately 8x shake reduction in 4K Active mode compared to standard SteadyShot
Video Capabilities
The ZV-1 records UHD 4K video at 30p or 24p using full pixel readout without binning, capturing about 1.7x the data required for 4K output. This oversampling enhances clarity and reduces moiré and aliasing. Sony’s XAVC S format records at bitrates up to 100 Mb/s for detailed footage.
Extensive gamma and color controls allow tuning of gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. S-Log2 offers up to approximately 1300% more dynamic range than Rec. 709, while S-Log3 further expands latitude with an effective 14-stop dynamic range, providing more control in the shadows and mid-tones. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and BT.2020 color space support integrate seamlessly into HDR workflows.
High Frame Rate recording enables advanced slow motion in Full HD, with a standard 120 fps setting for slow-motion playback in post. Additionally, a dedicated HFR mode can capture at up to 960 fps for ultra-slow-motion effects. A Photo Capture function lets you save 8.29MP still frames from UHD 4K footage or 2MP stills from Full HD recordings. Vertical videos can be recorded with metadata for correct orientation during playback and sharing, and the camera is NTSC/PAL switchable for worldwide use.
Autofocus & Tracking
The Fast Hybrid AF system combines 315 phase-detection points covering approximately 65% of the frame with 425 contrast-detection areas for fast, reliable focusing in a variety of scenes. The camera quickly locks onto subjects and maintains focus even during movement, with Real-time Tracking leveraging AI-based subject recognition.
Real-time Eye AF, for both humans and animals, keeps eyes sharply focused during still and video recording, making it ideal for talking-head content and portrait-style vlogs.
Wireless Connectivity & Streaming
Built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enable quick transfer of photos and videos to mobile devices for sharing to social platforms, email, and cloud services. Linked devices can display a live view and control the camera remotely using supported apps and features.
With firmware version 2.00, the ZV-1 supports livestreaming by simply connecting the camera to a computer via USB, using UVC and UAC standards for improved video and audio quality in streaming and video conferencing. The update also enhances compatibility with Sony Xperia smartphones, allowing you to use the phone as a hotspot and secondary display for monitoring the live feed and reading comments while streaming on the go.
Grip & Handling
The camera’s compact, lightweight body integrates an easy-to-hold right-hand grip designed for comfortable one-handed operation. The large REC button and front tally lamp combine with the side flip-out screen to simplify self-shooting.
The included Sony GP-VPT2BT wireless shooting grip further enhances handling. It connects to compatible Sony cameras via Bluetooth, eliminating cables. Integrated controls include a shutter release, video record button, zoom rocker, and a customizable C1 button for quick access to key functions.
The grip converts into a compact tabletop tripod by splaying its legs, supporting hands-free shooting and stable framing for talking-head content, product demos, or livestreams. Its tilting head allows upward tilt to 80° (40° in tripod mode), downward tilt to 90°, and 360° rotation for flexible positioning, while its dust- and moisture-resistant construction complements use with weather-sealed cameras.
Additional Creative & Operational Features
Interval shooting mode supports time-lapse creation when paired with Imaging Edge software, with selectable intervals from 1 to 60 seconds and up to 9999 frames. In-camera USB charging via the micro-USB port supports long shooting sessions, including extended intervals.
The Anti-Distortion electronic shutter enables nearly silent shooting and shutter speeds up to 1/32000 second, minimizing rolling shutter and allowing wide-aperture shooting in bright light. File name customization lets you replace the default “DSC” prefix, and continuous-shot groups can be reviewed and deleted as sets for faster culling. Step Zoom provides quick jumps between common focal lengths (24, 28, 35, 50, 70mm).
Creative Style presets (Standard, Vivid, Neutral, Clear, Deep, Light, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, Night Scene, Autumn Leaves, Black & White, Sepia, and Style Box) and numerous Picture Effect modes (including Toy Camera, Pop Color, Posterization, Soft High-Key, HDR Painting, Miniature, Watercolor, and Illustration) offer in-camera looks. Picture Profile options with adjustable parameters, including multiple gamma curves (Movie, Still, Cine1-2, ITU709, ITU709[800%], S-Log2, S-Log3, HLG, HLG1-3), allow deeper image customization for advanced users.
