Firmware v2.00 Enhancements
Firmware v2.00 for the FX3A introduces the BIG6 home screen, providing a consolidated view of key shooting settings and equipment configurations for quicker on-set checks. New 1.5x and 1.6x De-Squeeze Display options make it easier to monitor anamorphic content directly on the camera’s LCD.
The update also enables Focus Magnifier and Auto Magnifier in manual focus modes while using the Bright Monitoring function, improving critical focus in low-light scenes. Raw video output via HDMI unlocks external Blackmagic Raw recording, and the camera can automatically recognise a USB-LAN conversion adapter for wired network connectivity.
Workflow enhancements include filtering camera images for smartphone and FTP transfers, and recording the optical density of pre-registered ND filters in the metadata. These additions help maintain continuity and traceability from capture through to post-production.
Cinema-Optimised 4K Capture
Full-Frame Sensor and BIONZ XR Engine
A 35.6 x 23.8 mm full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor with 12.1MP resolution (10.2MP effective for video) pairs with a BIONZ XR engine to deliver clean, low-noise imagery across a wide sensitivity range. Native ISO spans ISO 80 to 102400, expandable to ISO 409600, while the sensor’s design and processing pipeline achieve more than 15 stops of dynamic range for nuanced highlight and shadow control.
Cinematic Colour and Gamma Options
S-Cinetone provides cinematic colour, gentle highlight roll-off, and natural skin tones that align with Sony’s VENICE, FX9, and FX6 cameras. For deeper grading flexibility and multi-camera matching, the FX3A supports S-Log3 with S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine, as well as S-Log2. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) enables direct HDR delivery, while Standard gamma profiles suit fast-turnaround content.
Versatile Recording Formats and Frame Rates
The FX3A records UHD 4K at frame rates from 1 to 120 fps and Full HD 1080p from 1 to 240 fps, including Super 35 format capture for higher frame-rate HD. Internal codecs include XAVC HS, XAVC S, and XAVC S-I with 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling, supporting data rates up to 600 Mb/s. Proxy files can be generated alongside full-resolution clips to accelerate editing workflows.
For maximum image quality and flexibility, the camera outputs 16-bit raw via HDMI at resolutions up to DCI 4K and UHD 4K, while simultaneously recording XAVC 4K and proxy files internally. A silent active cooling system and integrated heatsink help prevent thermal shutdown, supporting continuous recording in demanding conditions.
Autofocus and Solo Operation
Fast Hybrid AF and Intelligent Tracking
The Fast Hybrid AF system employs 759 phase-detection points covering approximately 89% of the image area for reliable focus acquisition. Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF, powered by AI-based algorithms, keep subjects sharply focused even during rapid movement or when they briefly turn away from the camera.
Seven AF Transition Speed settings allow controlled, cinematic focus shifts, while five AF Subject Shift Sensitivity levels define how quickly focus moves between subjects. This combination gives operators fine creative control over focus behaviour in both scripted and run-and-gun shooting scenarios.
Cage-Free Ergonomics for Single Operators
The FX3A’s cage-free design integrates multiple 1/4-20 mounting points into the camera body and detachable handle, allowing direct attachment of accessories such as monitors, microphones, or arms. Clustered controls for record, focus, and menus, along with six customisable buttons, enable one-handed control so the other hand remains free to manage lens settings or support the rig.
Tilting Touchscreen and Tally Indicators
A 7.6 cm tilting touchscreen LCD with approximately 2.35 million dots provides flexible viewing angles and direct touch access to focus and key menu functions. Tally indicators on the top, front, and rear clearly display recording status to the operator, talent, and crew, aiding timing and coordination on set.
Professional Audio and Connected Workflow
XLR Handle and Multi-Channel Recording
The included XLR handle unit adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs, a mic holder, and physical audio controls, enabling professional microphones and line sources to be recorded directly to camera. Combined with the FX3A’s built-in stereo mic and 3.5 mm input, you can capture up to four channels of 24-bit LPCM audio or operate in a leaner two-channel configuration when preferred.
Remote Control, Streaming, and File Transfers
The FX3A can be controlled remotely via Sony’s Imaging Edge Mobile and Imaging Edge Desktop apps, allowing wireless monitoring and adjustment of key settings. Footage and stills can be transferred using dual-band Wi-Fi or over a wired USB-C connection so editors can begin work while production continues. The camera also supports streaming via the Imaging Edge Webcam app when connected to a computer.
Stabilisation Metadata and Post-Production Tools
When used with compatible E-mount lenses, the FX3A records camera-shake metadata that can be utilised in Sony’s Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Browse software to refine stabilisation in post. This workflow lets you balance stabilisation strength against image cropping to achieve the desired look while maintaining compositional flexibility.
Cinema Line Consistency and Mobility
Shared Technologies with FX6 and a7S III
The FX3A shares core imaging technologies with the FX6 and a7S III, including a 12.1MP full-frame Exmor R sensor, BIONZ XR processing, 4K 120p and HD 240p recording, and a dynamic range of 15+ stops. Gamma options such as S-Cinetone, S-Log3, HLG, and Rec.709 ensure compatibility with existing Sony Cinema Line workflows, while tally lamps, an internal fan, and a zoom lever further reinforce its role as a compact cinema camera.
Stabilisation, Power Management, and Connectivity
5-axis in-body image stabilisation helps smooth handheld footage, particularly when combined with stabilised E-mount lenses. The camera offers 16-bit raw output via HDMI and a high-sensitivity ISO range extending to ISO 409600. The NP-FZ100 battery delivers longer runtimes than previous generations, and USB Power Delivery enables extended operation from compatible external power sources. Wi-Fi 5 and wired LAN via USB-C with an adapter support efficient on-set collaboration and remote workflows.
Sony FE 28-70mm f/2 GM Lens
Speedy Standard Zoom for Hybrid Shooters
The FE 28-70mm f/2 GM is a high-performance all-rounder and Sony’s first G Master zoom with a constant f/2 maximum aperture. Covering a versatile 28 to 70 mm range from wide-angle to portrait-length, it is designed for photographers and filmmakers who want to replace multiple primes with a single zoom without sacrificing speed or image quality. It spans some of the most frequently used focal lengths, delivers impressively fast autofocus, and offers a well-balanced feel for both stills and video work.
G Master Optical Performance
A constant f/2 maximum aperture is one stop faster than conventional f/2.8 standard zooms, further enhancing low-light performance and providing greater control over depth of field and subject-background separation. XA, Super ED, aspherical, and ED elements combine to deliver high sharpness and smooth rendering across the frame, suiting subjects from architecture and landscapes to portraits, weddings, and events.
Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting for rich contrast and vivid colour in a variety of lighting conditions. A floating focus design maintains image quality throughout the focusing range, preserving sharpness from infinity down to the minimum focusing distance of 38 cm. A rounded 11-blade diaphragm produces smooth, circular bokeh that complements the shallow depth-of-field potential of the f/2 aperture.
Hybrid-Focused AF and Control
Designed for hybrid shooters, the FE 28-70mm f/2 GM uses four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors for fast, responsive, and quiet autofocus. The system supports continuous shooting speeds up to 120 fps or high-speed video recording up to 240 fps on compatible bodies. An internal focusing design enhances speed, maintains the lens length during operation, and improves balance when used on gimbals or rigs.
A short-throw zoom mechanism means the lens extends only about 1.8 cm when zooming from 28 to 70 mm, so gimbal settings typically remain stable when changing focal length. Focus breathing is greatly reduced optically, and the lens supports Breathing Compensation on select cameras to further minimise angle-of-view shifts while focusing. A manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent operation, and zoom ring torque can be set to smooth or tight for tailored handling.
Portable and Robust Construction
Despite its bright f/2 aperture and flexible range, the FE 28-70mm f/2 GM maintains a portable form, measuring approximately 14.0 cm in length and weighing around 918 g. It is approximately 28% larger and 24% heavier than the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, while delivering twice the light-gathering ability thanks to the faster aperture. Much of the weight is positioned toward the rear of the barrel for a balanced feel in handheld use.
A manual aperture ring offers tactile exposure control, with the option to de-click for smooth iris pulls or lock in the “A” position for camera-based aperture control. Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch provide intuitive focus management, while a zoom smoothness switch lets you choose between Smooth and Tight ring resistance. A hybrid construction using both metal and engineered plastics balances durability with low weight.
The lens features a dust- and moisture-resistant design with rubber gaskets at each seam and a sealing ring at the mount for confidence in inclement weather. The front element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and simplifies cleaning. The included lens hood features a locking button and a filter window, enabling easy adjustment of rotating filters such as polarisers or variable NDs.
