Sony ECM-W5T Wireless Microphone Transmitter

Overview

The Sony ECM-W5T Wireless Microphone Transmitter is a wireless microphone/transmitter for expanding an ECM-W5 system or recording audio on its own. Paired with the ECM-W5 receiver, which is sold separately, it captures wireless audio for Sony cameras with a Multi Interface (MI) Shoe and a built-in digital audio interface.

With 64GB of onboard storage, clip and magnet mounting, a locking lavalier input and an upright form that is easy to hold, it suits interviews, reporting and content creation.

Wireless Audio Quality

Used with the ECM-W5 receiver, the transmitter captures up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float audio. Compatible Sony cameras record the 32-bit float signal inside the video file, so quiet voices and sudden peaks can be balanced in post and there is no separate file to sync. Transmission has low latency and reaches about 500 m in line of sight, and Bluetooth hopping helps keep the link stable in crowded radio conditions. Adding it to an ECM-W5 system lets you record up to four speakers on separate in-camera tracks.

Onboard Recording

The 64GB of internal storage lets the transmitter record independently with no receiver or camera, handy for standalone voice recording or as a backup during a wireless shoot, and recording is started and stopped on the transmitter itself. Files can be exported to a computer over USB-C, directly or through a compatible charging case, and the transmitter also connects to compatible phones and computers for other recording uses.

Battery Life

The transmitter runs for up to seven hours of continuous use per charge. In an ECM-W5 setup where the camera powers the receiver, recharging the transmitter in the charging case extends total use to up to 11 hours. LEDs show power, recording and link status from a distance, and with an ECM-W5 receiver and a compatible camera, camera-linked power can switch the transmitter on remotely.
