Sensor and Processing

12.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor

A redesigned 12.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor features a back-illuminated Exmor RS design for improved clarity, reduced noise, and exceptional sensitivity with ISO 80–102400 (extended ISO 40–409600). The updated architecture provides up to 2× faster readout speeds and, combined with the BIONZ XR processor, reduces rolling shutter by up to 3× and provides 8× faster overall performance.

The sensor and processor combination also enables up to 14 stops of dynamic range for stills and approximately 15 stops for video. Continuous shooting reaches up to 10 fps for up to 1000 uncompressed raw images.

Video Capabilities

UHD 4K 120p Video, 10-Bit 4:2:2 Internal Recording

UHD 4K recording up to 120p is achieved with full 1:1 pixel readout without binning. Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling is supported in all modes, and 16-bit raw output is available from the full-size HDMI Type A port. The camera supports XAVC HS (H.265), XAVC S, and XAVC S-I ALL-Intra codecs with bitrates reaching 600 Mb/s.

Recording Flexibility

High-speed 120 fps enables 4× or 5× slow motion at playback rates of 30p or 24p. Full HD recording extends slow-motion capability up to 240 fps. The camera has no recording time limits and features an enhanced heat-dissipating structure enabling approx. 60 minutes of 4K60p capture.

Advanced Color Control

S-Cinetone provides cinematic rendering based on Sony’s Cinema Line. S-Log2 and S-Log3 offer expanded dynamic range, delivering up to 1300% more dynamic range than traditional REC709 for flexible grading.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

Fast Hybrid AF System

759 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection points cover 92% of the image area. Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF (for humans and animals) ensure stable focus. The AF system is functional in all video modes with sensitivity down to -6 EV. Controls include a seven-step AF Transition Speed and five-step AF Subject Shift Sensitivity.

5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization

Provides up to 5.5 stops of correction for pitch, yaw, roll, and horizontal/vertical shift. Active IS enhances stabilization for video and handheld workflows.

QXGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF

9.44m-dot resolution, 0.9× magnification, 25mm eye point, 41° field of view, and a 120 fps display mode. A fluorine coating resists smudging and supports easy cleaning.

The articulating touchscreen enables flexible high, low, and front-facing shooting positions. The updated menu system improves usability for photo and video operations.
